The terrain in which NORSAR is frequently asked to search can be very treacherous and safety is our
utmost priority. We must be able to not only keep our team safe but also other searchers and the subject. We train year round so when the situation arises we are able to not only use ropes to safely repel in andout of hazardous areas but to also have the ability to help safely remove a subject. It takes a lot ofpractice and skill to be able to safely harness not only ourselves but to also safely harness others.
We practice the teamwork needed to man the ropes to safely raise and lower others out of hazardous
regions. We also practice removing an injured or unconscious victim using a stokes. Our belief is that
you can not be safe working in treacherous situations if you only practice on a sunny day on a dry
slope. We practice in the rain and in varying terrain so we are ready when the call comes and we are
needed .
